The Song author Li Qingzhao (1081–ca. 1141), one of the most erudite women of her age, captures the increasingly cultured atmosphere of tea drinking with a lively vignette.[27] Although famous tea experts were exclusively male, educated women also participated in tea culture, albeit in a less visible fashion. Because Li grew up in a sophisticated family that nurtured the highest standards of literati culture, she amalgamated tea into her literary games.

Each time after we finished eating we would return to the study, have a seat, and brew tea. With a pile of books and histories, we would say what event was recorded in which line of which page of which chapter of which volume. Then we would open the books and check to see who won and who lost, thereby determining who drank first and who last. Sometimes when someone was correct we would laugh with delight and lift up our bowls, overturning them so that we could not drink any tea at all.
